Hip Hop has always drawn from the textures of sampled music. But when Kanye West dropped his debut, College Dropout, he exposed many to a fresh new perspective on the art and technique of mixing samples and live instruments. With "Rich Mahogany”, we recreated those very same vibes. This pack consists of textures reminiscent of the smoothest vintage soul cuts, seamlessly intertwined with three-dimensional sounding live Rhodes and piano processed through analog gear. Rich Mahogany is a Soul Surplus Exclusive, and one of four special Black Friday releases. It features over 30 melodic loops, with full stems for each composed loop.

Live drums are a staple in most genres of music. In hip-hop music, we have a tendency to take live drum samples and process them until they smack the way they ought to. Deep Marsh, our latest drum sample kit, is no exception. We recorded one shots from a live drumset, and dipped each sound in a swamp of analog processing (outboard compression, analog tape, Pultec style EQ) until each hit took on a larger-than-life persona of it’s own.

We also created loops from each sound and mixed them through SSL-bus-compression and analog tape for that unmistakable grit and glue. It is no mystery that the Soul Surplus team enjoys and utilizes ambient sounds in the many projects we are apart of. However, it seems to be that the words ‘ambience’ and ‘soul’ are rarely used in the same sentence. That is, until we created Echochamber. Echochamber was created using a combination of analog spring reverbs and massive digital plate and room reverbs mixed into dense, yet lush and detailed arrangements. This pack features many different instruments, from guitar, to a wide range of analog synths, to Rhodes and piano sounds. We try as hard as we can to diversify our sound and approach when it comes to the sounds we release. Although we have created in many different genres (rock, electronic, trap, boom-bap, cinematic, and more), our wheelhouse will always be vintage soul music.
