Swamps and costal estuaries are among the most valuable ecosystems on earth. Not only are they home to an extraordinary variety of plants and animals, but they act like giant sponges or reservoirs. When heavy rains cause flooding, swamps and other wetlands absorb excess water, softening the effects of flooding. Swamps also protect coastal areas from storm surges that can wash away fragile coastline. The swamp ecosystem also acts as a water treatment plant, filtering wastes and purifying water naturally. But for most of history, wetlands were looked upon as sinister and forbidding wastelands that are now under severe threat from climate change, habitat loss, and pollution.

Splice Explores: Swamps unearths the amazing diversity of these precious ecosystems through sound and music. Recorded by Splice’s in-house team and producer/artist Galen Tipton, we captured a massive collection of the gooey, dripping, jittery, thick, and strange chaotic sounds you’ll find in the swamps of the American South. This pack includes deafening frog calls, spooky owl hoots, delicate dragonfly wing flapping, and a ton of strange underwater sounds using a hydrophone. In additional to the many high-fidelity dry field recordings, Galen processed a selection of sounds into entirely unique color bass and hyper pop percussion, drums, synths, and fx that act as perfect hidden gems to any pop or electronic production.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind pack that not only transports you to a precious and bizarre underworld, but it’s a mini library of totally unusual sounds that you won’t find anywhere else. Explore the pack today!

A special thanks to ecologist Julie L. Whitbeck, biologist Gina Zwicky, the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve outside of New Orleans, the Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi, and the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area in Louisiana for help with our recordings.

Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, is one of the crown jewels of Utah’s state park system. The uninhabited 42-square-mile desert island is renowned for its wildlife watching, including one of the nation’s largest bison herds, pristine ecosystems, and gorgeous desert and mountain vistas.

Due to increasing temperatures and snowmelt in the area during the '80s and '90s, the surrounding lake routinely flooded the island, marooning the bison and all other wildlife into small mini islands for decades at a time. Today, temperatures have dried out the salt flats to such an extent that Antelope Island is no longer an island at all. Not to mention, the Great Salt Lake is a puddle of its former self, with salinity far beyond what's found in the ocean.

ONE OF THE MOST TRICKY BIOMES TO RECORD
Fresh and ever fascinating: With careful planning, patient recording and favourable luck, Sound Tracker® Gordon Hempton has created this fantastic ninth Quiet Planet nature library that will totally expand and deepen your understanding of natural sound spheres.

VARIOUS STANDING WATER ENVIRONMENTS
As used here, WETLANDS include places with standing fresh water such as swamps, marshes, ponds, and lakes. In fact, it’s the water itself that creates these very special acoustic biospheres – as a propagator of sounds, causing them to travel further and louder due to surface reflections and temperature layers.
