Sonic Collective Kyrgyz Komuz w Askat Jetigen Uulu WAV
Found Sound Nation presents this sample pack of classical Kygyz komuz performed by Bishkek-based artist Askat Jetigen Uulu. Recorded at Nastavnik Studio in Bishkek, these recordings capture masterful komuz playing inspired by modern technique, as well as traditional melodies and dastans from Kyrgyzstan. From galloping rhythms to spiraling leads, this pack captures the delicate nuance of the Central Asian gut stringed instrument.

Askat Jetigen Uulu is a renowned Bishkek-based composer and performer of Kyrgyz traditional music. He has served as musical director for the award-winning folk theater group Ordo Sakhna and teaches traditional music at Ustatshakirt Plus. In addition to touring internationally, he has received fellowships and honors from Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Montalvo Arts and the U.S. State Department’s OneBeat program.

The gayageum is a traditional plucked zither and is one of the most iconic Korean instruments. Often with 12 strings, but upwards of 25, it is an incredibly versatile string instrument. For this sample collection, Sonic Collective and Found Sound Nation teamed up with Kyungso Park, renowned gayageum performer, improviser and composer, to prepare a mix of rhythmic melodies and short gestures, drawing influences from "earth, metal, wood, and silk.” The samples included here were recorded in Kyungso’s studio apartment in Seoul, South Korea.

The guembri is a plucked three-stringed bass lute made from log and camel skin. Marked by low-toned, highly rhythmic melodies, it is central to Gnawa music, a body of spiritual and hypnotic music from Morocco and parts of sub-Saharan Africa. For this sample collection, Found Sound Nation teamed up with prodigious guembri player Mehdi Nassouli to produce an ecstatic and mesmerizing set of melodies and rhythms performed on guembri, karkabas (a set of hand-held metallic castanets), lira (a traditional bamboo flute), awicha (a smaller version of the guembri), and taarija (a Moroccan hand-held drum similar to Darbuka).

Tabla is arguably one of the most expressive drums in the world. With over 30 different tones, or ‘bols’, it can seem as if the pair of hand drums, collectively called tabla, are ‘speaking’ rhythm. For this sample collection, Sonic Collective & Found Sound Nation teamed up with master tabla player and percussionist, Surojato Roy, to prepare a gorgeous set of intricate traditional and contemporary rhythms as well as singular ringing and struck tones across various tabla and tunings. The samples included here were recorded in Surjoato’s studio in New Delhi, India.
