Arcology is the fusion of architecture with ecology, a comprehensive urban perspective. In nature, as organisms evolve, they increase in complexity and become a more compact system. A city should similarly evolve, functioning as a living system. Arizona’s iconic town of Arcosanti is putting this concept to the test with a radical reorganization of the sprawling urban landscape into dense, integrated, three-dimensional mini-city that promotes community, creativity, and connection with the environment.

What does Arcology sound like? Splice Explores: Arcology dives into a sonic exploration of how architecture shapes sound and the experience of living in uniquely reverberating shapes. The Splice team went back to Arcosanti to collaborate with resident artists Adam Taylor, Pinto Bella, and Ace Schutte to share their story of this unique architectural space through sound.

We captured wandering flutes bouncing off cavernous arches, accordion loops inside of a wind tunnel, harp melodies echoing up a concrete stairwell, and metal percussion struck inside a semi-dome forgery. Combined with beautiful field recordings of the surrounding nature, this pack became an eclectic and gorgeous collection of multi-purpose sounds that demonstrate how the spaces we occupy shape our listening experience. Delve into these one-of-a-kind samples and shape your own sonic structure.

Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, is one of the crown jewels of Utah’s state park system. The uninhabited 42-square-mile desert island is renowned for its wildlife watching, including one of the nation’s largest bison herds, pristine ecosystems, and gorgeous desert and mountain vistas.

Due to increasing temperatures and snowmelt in the area during the '80s and '90s, the surrounding lake routinely flooded the island, marooning the bison and all other wildlife into small mini islands for decades at a time. Today, temperatures have dried out the salt flats to such an extent that Antelope Island is no longer an island at all. Not to mention, the Great Salt Lake is a puddle of its former self, with salinity far beyond what's found in the ocean.

Arcosanti is an experimental town in the high desert of Arizona that has become a destination for innovative architecture and sustainability that has shaped the global conversation of balancing humankind’s needs with the planet’s natural resources for 50 years. Today Arcosanti is home to a vibrant year-round multi-generational community of more than 60 residents who collaborate to create art, handmade products, and to practice and develop sustainable living solutions.

On a road trip across America, Splice worked with the community's current artistic residents to record a variety of instruments, unusual reverbs, and the diverse cacophony of sounds echoing throughout the arches and canyons of Arcosanti. Flutes, harps, tongue drums, the screeches and slams of the ceramic foundry, and the world-famous Arcosanti wind bells make up the hauntingly beautiful sonic palate of this one-of-a-kind location.

The 100% Organically Sourced sample pack was the brainchild of artist & activist Madame Gandhi and the Woodstock, NY-based music collective and retreat, Sound MANA. Working in collaboration, they sought to create a collection of sounds that'd help creators connect to nature. They captured unique, high-quality field recordings of plants and animals in nature to observe how they'd be used as electronic sounds.

Madame Gandhi shared, "So often as a producer, I find myself loving what is available to me online, and yet I do not know where the sound came from. I want my audience to be inspired by what nature can offer. With this pack, I intended to contribute to a movement that thinks critically about not only the source of the instrumentation but also the content in our lyrics. As an artist and producer, I see an enormous opportunity in being able to provide music and sounds that elevate the collective consciousness. By making this pack, we hope that the Splice community finds joy in reconnecting with nature.".

Samuel Vaille, otherwise known as sv1, is a Texas-based experimental producer and sound designer. He is best known for his amorphous debut EP ‘field study’ via Curiosity Shop and his ‘Organic Sound Design Masterclass’ via Lux Cache that takes the listener into a digital and aquatic dream-like soundscape.

In this Explores pack, sv1 took sounds of nature, water, metal, footsteps, household objects (basically anything he could get his hands on) and ran them through a vocoder. The result is a bizarre underworld of textures, harmonies, and musical artifacts that sounds like a digital apocalypse. As the dust clears from the vocoder wreckage, sift through this pack’s unique samples to discover unusual yet beautiful sounds that will set your production apart.
