From country blues to Chicago blues, blues rock to modern blues, and even jazz blues -- you’ll hear your favorite blues guitarists ‘funk’ some of the songs up with a syncopated, percussive guitar part, that gets toes tapping and bodies moving. Play your way through Carl Burnett’s Spotlight On Funky Blues Rhythm course and you’ll be able to do the same at your next gig or jam session.
”Blues is a style of music, just like funk, that’s really all about the feel and the groove. But as guitar players, it’s important not to let our blues rhythm game get stale, playing the same old blues shuffle patterns every time we approach a 12-bar. Ever had a band mate ask ‘Can you make it more funky??’ Yes you can!”
Playing "funky” rhythm guitar parts is an essential skill you can apply across every genre of music -- especially the blues. Whether you’re gigging steadily with the band or jamming out at the local club, you may be called upon to play the blues tune with a funky feel.
”Locking into the rhythm section with a syncopated, percussive guitar part is really more about feel than anything else. And "feel” is the main focus of this course as we shine a spotlight on a variety of ways to craft funky blues rhythm guitar parts .
I’ve organized the curriculum into six performance study sets. Each set explores a different approach for "funking up” a common 12-bar blues feel. Each of the six studies will highlight a common blues form you may find in any set list, from traditional jump shuffles, to classic mid-tempo minor blues, and everything in between.
I’ll first demonstrate and explain how each "funky” approach works. Then we’ll put the approach to work, over backing tracks for musical context. Well work with a variety of keys, tempos and common blues rhythms.
I’ll play two choruses on each, with increasing levels of funk embellishments as we progress through the tune. You’ll get the feel under your finger into your soul by playing along with me, and then you’ll jam own on your own, over the track.”
Carl will explain and demonstrate the key concepts and approaches as you play through the course. You’ll get standard notation and tabs for all of the performance studies. Plus, you’ll be able to use TrueFire’s learning tools to sync the tab and notation to the video lesson.
You can also loop or slow down the videos so that you can work with the lessons at your own pace. All of the backing tracks are also included to work with on your own.
Grab your guitar, and let’s ‘funk up’ our blues with Carl Burnett!
