The Ensoniq sound: digital character and analog crunch
In the 1980s and 1990s, Ensoniq became known for developing cutting-edge equipment at affordable prices. Their gear had a lasting impact on the musical landscape of the time, helping to popularize the plucky arpeggios, glassy keys, and choir pads that define the era. Ensoniq hardware even ended up in the studios of artists like Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre, and is still sought after today for the rich, warm sound produced by its combination of digital chips and analog filtering.
Anyone interested in genres like synth pop, new wave, electro, and synth funk – or any of the contemporary sounds that are influenced by them – will find plenty to love in Nostalgique. This collection of instruments and drums is taken from three classic pieces of Ensoniq gear:
Ensoniq Mirage – a synth/sampler workstation featuring an 8-bit digital sampling engine with 32 kHz resolution and analog filters.
Ensoniq ESQ-1 – a digital synth that combines an Ensoniq-designed wavetable chip with analog filters and a hybrid 8-voice architecture.
Ensoniq ASR-X – a wave-sampling workstation known for its distinctive sequencer.

Released in 1986, the Ensoniq ESQ-1 was one of the first affordably priced workstation-class keyboards on the market, combining an 8-voice, multitimbral digital/analog hybrid synthesizer and a featured 8-track sequencer. The ESQ-1's voice architecture allows customization of up to 3 digital oscillators, assignable to any one of 32 waveshapes, followed by a Curtis 4-pole 24dB/oct resonant low-pass analog filter and 15 routable modulation sources. The sound quality of the ESQ-1 is all-at-once digital, warm and unmistakably '80s - a true gem of the time whose sounds still ring with a brilliant depth and character.
